Music Appreciation Syllabus

Music Appreciation Course Syllabus

Instructor: Alex Verburg

Email: averburg@whancock.org

Course Description:

Students enrolled in music appreciation have the opportunity to learn about music in a way not taught in a performing ensemble.  Course content may include: history from various genres of music, from the past up to the present, anatomy of the voice, sound engineering, music management, and the study and history of current popular music to name a few.  The class is not exclusively lecture based, but a class where students will be learning in a variety of ways.

Classroom expectations:

1.      I allow students to remain in my classroom as long as they do not cause a problem for anyone else.

2.      If they cause a problem, I will ask them to fix it.

3.      If they can't or will not fix it, I will do something.

4.      What I do will depend on the unique situation.

Grading:

Grading will be done using the school grading system.  Students will be graded weekly following a simple grading rubric, as well as by formal and informal assessments.  Here is the breakdown of the grades:

*Weekly grade 20%

*formal assessments/projects/presentations/papers 80%

I am looking forward to working with all of you and have a strong belief that communication is very important to the success of any classroom.  I will be more than happy to listen to any concerns the might arise throughout the year.  Let’s have a great year!!
